Enchanting wooden stories

Puppetry in Pilsen Region is a term, which extends beyond our republic. Tradition of local puppetry reaches back to the 19th century, when both amateurs and professional puppet theatres had been founded. The greater fame for Pilsen’s puppetry came with a puppeteer, director and dramatist Josef Skupa, who is unmistakably connected with an original couple Spejbl and Hurvínek. Another extremely significant big name of Pilsen’s puppetry was Czech artist and illustrator Jiří Trnka. He was one of the founders of Czech animated film, and he was designing and creating sceneries for puppetry theatre of Josef Skupa in Plzeň.
